Alice Walker
Acrylic paint
11” x 14”
My favorite book by Alice Walker is “The Color Purple ''. It is a story of a broken and stuck young girl with an abusive father. This piece of work is very provocative and personal. To honor this work I made the background purple and lavender. She also once said, “A woman is to a feminist and purple is to lavender.” This quote also caught my attention so I found a way to show both. Walker, an African American woman, was also once asked to give up her seat on a bus. This reminded me of the legacy left by Rosa Parks. I simplified the bus as I did the plane in my “the Riveter” painting. As a last step to accentuate the purple I wrote, “The Color Purple”, which was the name of her book.
